The
C's
Colour
'Shine bright like a diamond' only rings true with a gleaming white stone. The brighter the stone means more value and rarity. Colours are listed alphabetically, D colour offers an exceptional white diamond, as the scale moves towards the letter Z, the diamond becomes more yellow, brown or grey.
Butler & Rose exclusively source D-G coloured diamonds, which are 'Rare White' to 'Exceptional White'. These stones hold their value better and are more beautiful with eye-catching sparkle.
Clarity
Clarity looks at the inclusions or flaws within a diamond. Once you see a flaw, you'll always see it so it's important to choose a diamond with great clarity. Flawless diamonds are more rare and command the highest premium. Many diamonds have natural inclusions that are invisible to the naked eye and do not affect their beauty. Butler & Rose clarity is of flawless to VS2 quality. Qualities of VS2 and above are very high which means any flaw is virtually imperceptible to the naked eye.
Cut
Cut is the only C which has benefited from advancements in technology. The best diamonds sparkle with what is known as 'ideal proportions' which allows light to refract and reflect perfectly to give the greatest sparkle. A perfect diamond can be wasted if it is not cut well and this requires great skill. The Cut of a diamond is judged on its Polish, Symmetry, and Cut Grade. Butler & Rose only use stones with Excellent, Very Good and Good results. Cut is what will give your stone its brilliance and brings the other characteristics to life.
Carat
The carat is the unit of weight for a stone. Its origins are from ancient Egypt whereby the carob seed was used as a comparison standard. This in time turned into 'carat', at 0.20 grams, and so we use this to compare weight among gemstones. Remember, a higher carat is not always better quality. The size of a diamond can increase its value and rarity but is less important if it is not matched with a good grade of colour, clarity and cuts.
Brilliant Cut Diamonds
Approximately 70% of the world’s diamonds are cut as round. With perfect symmetry the light bounces around inside the stone and gives off fireworks of little sparkles. Other diamonds adopt this symmetry but modify the outer shape to become cushion, oval, marquise, heart, or pear shaped, among others. Brilliant cut diamonds celebrate the skill of the diamonds cut and polish whereby the more perfect the symmetry and proportions, the more bountiful the sparkles.
Step Cut Diamonds
The step cut family represent those diamonds that you fall in to as you look over them. When done correctly your step cut diamond will typically have a large table facet and emit flashes of brilliance to embody a ‘hall of mirrors’ effect which is both elegant and sophisticated. More understated than the sparkly Brilliant Cut family, clarity is celebrated here as well as crisp faceting and long lines. Step cuts are more recognisable as Art Deco, and the most common types are emerald cut, asscher cut, baguette cut, carré cut, and step cut trapezoids.

Introducing
Coloured Diamonds
Coloured diamonds with a distinct and vibrant colour are very rare and have proven to be a better investment than their white diamond counter parts. Like all coloured gemstones, it is a chance to display some personality and be a little different.
Red is the rarest colour of diamond in the world. The cost of coloured diamonds reflect their level of rarity. Pink diamonds have doubled in value every 5 years, since the year 2000 and are due to increase further with the closure of the Argyle Mine in Australia. Yellow diamonds are the most popular alternative to white diamonds.
The colour grading scale is unique for coloured diamonds and is usually grouped into three main categories: Fancy, Fancy Intense, and Fancy Vivid. The stronger the colour the more expensive the stones however it does not always mean they are more enjoyable to the owner. The "best" colour is down to personal preference and a higher price doesn't mean it will be enjoyed more.

Precious Stones
Diamonds, emeralds, rubies and sapphires, also known as 'The Big Four' of gemstones, are the most sought after gems in the world. They are the record breakers and comprise almost all of the most famous stones throughout history. What we're commonly looking for here is bottle green emeralds, rich red rubies, cornflower blue sapphires and bright, clear diamonds.
Diamonds are unique here with clarity, as inclusions are more accepted with other precious gemstones. The very top qualities of all come with certificates, usually indicating if the gem is naturally beautiful or if it has had treatment. Rubies and sapphires are actually the same stone but in different colours. Emerald requires the most care as it is softer than the other precious stones however ruby, sapphire and diamond are very suitable for everyday enjoyment.

Semi-precious Stones
Top quality semi-precious stones are just as expensive as precious stones but can be a great way to celebrate a unique colour and choice in a piece of jewellery. All gems have distinctive characteristics which separate them from each other, so you can find something really unique with these gems. Fun examples are worn as cocktail rings and become a signature of the wearer. Birth stones are often semi-precious stones, check below to see which stone matches your birth month.
